Lackluster performances in Saturday wins cost Clemson and South Carolina in this week’s AP Top 25

Winning alone is not enough in the eyes of the media voters for the AP Top 25. Style counts for something. Clemson and South Carolina both won on Saturday. Both did so without much style.

The Tigers had to rally from a 16-point deficit to defeat Troy. The Gamecocks needed three non-offensive touchdowns to help put away FCS member South Carolina State.

As a result, both the Tigers and Gamecocks dropped out of the Top 10 in the new AP Top 25. The Tigers fell four spots to #12. The Gamecocks lost one spot after a week in the Top 10 and are #11 this week.

Two voters had USC as high as #7 on their ballots. One voter left the Gamecocks out of the top 25 altogether. In-state voters Scott Hamilton and Pete Yanity voted the Gamecocks 10th and 13th, respectively, the same as last week.

Clemson was voted as high as #8 and as low as #23. Hamilton had Clemson 11th on his ballot, and Yanity voted the Tigers 19th. Both had the Tigers 9th last week.

  1. I haven’t heard this from the media but I believe that Vacari Swain set an all time NCAA record with 3 consecutive punt return tds. Duane Pettis from the Washington Huskies had 3 punt return tds in 2017 but it was over a 3 game stretch. Antonio Perkins from Oklahoma had 3 punt return tds against UCLA but only the first 2 were consecutive. So perhaps I am wrong but it seems that 3 punt return tds in a row would be the all time NCAA record
