One of the key members of the USC baseball team will finish his career somewhere else. Infielder Michael Braswell announced on Twitter Sunday night that after two seasons with the Gamecocks, he has entered his name the NCAA Transfer Portal and will play elsewhere next season.
Braswell was the starting shortstop as a freshman for the Gamecocks in 2022. He lost the job at the start of this season when Braylon Wimmer was moved to short and Will McGillis transferred in and became the new second baseman.
But injuries around the infield led to Braswell becoming a starter again. He played third, short and second and appeared in 50 games, starting 36. Braswell batted .258 with one home run and 23 RBIs. He also walked 27 times. In the field, Braswell committed four errors on 97 chances.
Braswell’s departure is a major blow to the Gamecocks who will also lose Wimmer, McGillis and possibly first baseman Gavin Casas from the starting infield.
