Conway, SC: Old Dominion rolled up over 500 yards of total offense and scored 49 points to spoil “Homecoming” at Coastal Carolina on Saturday with a 49-21 win over the Chanticleers at Brooks Stadium. The triumph snapped CCU’s winning streak at nine-consecutive victories, which was the second-longest active winning streak in all of FBS football, behind Clemson’s 12 straight heading into the Tigers’ matchup against Florida State on Saturday night. The loss also dropped Coastal to 12-8 all-time in games played on “Homecoming Weekend” in the program’s 20-year history.

The visiting Monarchs controlled the game from the start, as the Old Dominion offense put up 525 yards of total offense, 324 of which game on the ground in the rushing attack. They averaged 10.9 yards per play and scored the most points they had all season with 49 in the win. Meantime, the Coastal offense totaled 454 yards overall for the game, but unlike the Monarchs, the Chanticleers threw for 366 yards and rushed for just 88 on the day.
Coastal’s offense was led by redshirt junior quarterback Grayson McCall, as he was 26-for-34 for 358 yards, the second-most passing yards in a single game in his career, and three touchdowns. His three touchdown tosses increased his career total to 72, which placed him in a tie with CCU “Hall of Famer” Alex Ross for the most career touchdown passes in program history.
McCall again spread the ball around, as eight different Chants had at least one reception for the contest, led by Sam Pinckney with a team-high seven catches for 113 yards and Jared Brown with five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. Both Jacob Jenkins (3 rec., 24 yards, TD) and Tyler Roberts (1 rec., 9 yards, TD) each had a touchdown catch.
For ODU, the offense was led by running back Blake Watson with a school-record 256 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just 18 rushing attempts. Fellow running back Obie Sanni carried the ball four times for 27 yards, while backup quarterback D.J. Mack Jr. had three carries for 26 yards and a touchdown.
The Monarchs’ quarterback Hayden Wolff was 12-for-16 for 180 yards and two touchdowns, while Mack Jr. completed his lone pass attempt for a 21-yard touchdown.
Just like on the offensive side of the ball, the ODU defense was in control for most of the contest, as the Monarchs had 7.0 sacks, 12.0 tackles-for-loss, and forced a fumble. Coastal had allowed just 7.0 total sacks over its first six games of the season.
Defensive back Tre Hawkins led the Monarchs’ defensive effort with 10 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup, while Shawn Asbury added seven tackles, finishing one ahead of the nation’s leading tackler in Jason Henderson, who had six stops in the win.
The Monarchs struck first on their opening drive of the contest, as the duo of Wolff and Watson led an eight-play, 73-yard drive, that was capped off by a 25-yard touchdown run by Watson to give ODU a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the first quarter.
The Chanticleers (6-1, 3-1 Sun Belt) will enjoy a bye next week before trekking north to take on Marshall (3-3, 0-2 Sun Belt) on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Huntington, W.Va.
