Coastal Carolina staved off elimination three times before their season came to an end at the hands of East Carolina, 13-4, in Greenville, NC, Monday. No. 8 ECU looked the part of a title contender, racking up 17 hits against a weary Chanticleers pitching staff. Coastal Carolina struggled to find enough arms to get through its fifth game in four days. Senior Reid VanScoter (9-4), the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, gave his team a chance, getting through the first two innings on just two days’ rest. VanScoter turned it over to a thin bullpen with his club down 2-0.
The Pirates (45-19) posted two more runs in the third and a run in the sixth before exploding in an eight-run seventh. The Chants’ lineup couldn’t keep pace against ECU’s top gun Carter Spivey (8-0). Leftfielder Nick Lucky kept Coastal (39-20-1) in the hunt with a two-run homer in the fourth, but little else went right at the plate, Monday. Lucky, Matt McDermott, Nick Parker and Christopher Rowan, Jr. were named to the Greenville Regional All-Tournament team.
East Carolina moves on and will play host to Texas in the Super Regionals.
