Clemson coach Dabo Swinney dropped an information bomb on the media Monday afternoon informing all that WR Justyn Ross will miss the 2020 season due to a congenital fusion and bulging disc in his back. Swinney said the condition was discovered by team doctors who examined Ross after he suffered an apparent shoulder stinger in spring practice. X-Rays revealed the back issue, and Ross will have surgery Friday in Pittsburgh.

More comments from Swinney on Ross:

  • Ross has never had issues with that condition, and he as a bulging disc as well, another issue.
  • Said they’ve spent a lot of time examining this situation Ross has been meeting with a specialist with the Pittsburgh Steelers and will have surgery up there Friday.
  • Said there’s no guarantees with anything, they hope this surgery will take Ross out of harms way as far as any bigger issues. They hope he’ll be healthy by January, and then he’ll have a decision to make about the NFL Draft or returning to school.
  • Said he was shocked liked everyone else but the doctor tells him there’s a good path for Ross to play football again.
  • The team was informed of the Ross situation a couple of team meetings back.

In his two seasons at Clemson, Ross has 112 catches for 1865 yards and 17 touchdowns. Last season he caught 66 balls for 865 yards and 8 touchdowns.

The Tigers, even without Ross, are well stocked at receiver with veterans Amari Rodgers, Cornell Powell, Frank Ladson and Joseph Ngata returning, plus Swinney is high on redshirt freshman Brannon Spector and newcomers EJ Williams and Ajou Ajou.
