Make it two in a row for the South in the Touchstone Energy Bowl following a 35-13 win Saturday afternoon in Myrtle Beach. Down 10-0 at the half, the South scored 35 second half points, 28 in the fourth quarter. They took their first lead at 14-13 on a 30 yard pass from Ty Olenchuck to D’Vonte Allen with 9:49 to play. De’Shareoh Williams made it 21-13 with a 4 yard run with 6:25 left. The South put the game away with 2:02 to play on an 6 yard pass from Olenchuck to Rakim White. And they added the icing on the cake with a 20 yard pass interception return for a touchdown by Terry Fields.

Game Notes:

  • The teams combined for just 100 rushing yards, 72 by the North.
  • The North ran 86 plays and had possession for seven more minutes, but was hurt by 14 penalties for 100 yards, 12 coming in the second half.
  • The North suffered 3 turnovers, the South did not have a turnover.
  • The South registered 5.5 sacks, the North 0. The South also broke up 11 passes.
  • Olenchuk passed for 219 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the South. Hunter Helms passed for 165 yards to lead the North offense.
  • Nanders Lawrence had 8 catches for 97 yards for the South. Eli Wilson caught 6 passes for 84 yards for the North.
  • Tyler Cherry, who threw a 95 yard touchdown pass for the North’s only touchdown, also caught 5 passes for 57 yards.
  • Dylan Beauford hit on 2-3 field goals for the North on a very windy day, one from 18 yards and the second from 25 yards.
  • The South’s Emmanuel Johnson filled the stat sheet with 8 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, 3 quarterback hurries and a block.

Luke Doty holds his Mr. Football Award (Travis Bell)

At halftime, Myrtle Beach quarterback Luke Doty was named the 25th Mr Football in South Carolina. This season Doty passed for 1817 yards and 25 touchdowns, and he rushed for 404 yards and 4 touchdowns. He suffered a broken thumb in the first playoff game and missed the Seahawks’ run to the 4A state championship game. He also was picked for the Shrine Bowl but will miss that. Doty will sign with USC next week and enroll in January giving the Gamecocks the last three winners of the award following Zacch Pickens and Dakereon Joyner. In fact, he’s the 10th recipient of the award who will have played his college football at USC.

The other finalists for the award were Noah Bell of Saluda, Mikele Colasurdo of Chapman, Rahjai Harris of Byrnes, Jalin Hyatt of Dutch Fork, Duane Martin of Laurens, and Tyler Venables of Daniel.
