USC went into Sunday’s game against Charleston Southern at Founder’s Park not only seeking a sweep of the Buccaneers but also a sweep of a five game week. But the Bucs got some excellent pitching, including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th with just one run scoring, and defeated the Gamecocks 4-2. That left USC with a 4-1 ledger to show for the week.
The Gamecocks got plenty of good pitching and offense during the week. They opened with wins over North Florida and Winthrop and closed winning two of three from Charleston Southern.
In Friday’s win over the Bucs, Adam Hill set a Founder’s Park record with 14 strikeouts. Freshman John Gilreath started against North Florida and finished against Charleston Southern Sunday. He’s yet to allow an earned run in 11.1 innings of work. Six pitchers combined to hold Winthrop to one earned run with Logan Chapman getting the win. Cody Morris allowed just four hits in Saturday’s win over the Bucs to improve to 2-0. Ridge Chapman took Sunday’s loss allowing all four runs in 5.2 innings.
LT Tolbert remains the hottest Gamecock at the plate. He had homers Wednesday and Friday, has hit in all eight games this season and will take a .500 batting average into next week. The Gamecocks have slugged 16 homers in their eight games.
The defense also remains solid with only four errors in the first eight games compared to 15 for their opponents.
This week the Gamecocks will host Furman on Tuesday afternoon then play their annual series with Clemson this weekend starting Friday night in Columbia.
