Mark Kingston was not a winner in his first game as USC’s baseball coach Friday, but his team bounced back over the weekend to win both games from VMI at Founder’s Park to make Kingston a winner in his first Gamecock series.
The Gamecocks closed out the series with the Keydets on Sunday afternoon with a 9-0 victory. That followed the 7-6 loss on Friday and a 7-2 win over Saturday.
Except for Adam Hill’s rough outing Friday, the pitching was stalwart. The bullpen did not allow a run in 12.1 innings of work in the series. Overall the pitching staff struck out 30 in the three games and limited VMI to a .167 batting average. Cody Morris picked up the win Saturday and Ridge Chapman earned the victory Sunday.
The defense backed up the pitching committing just one error.
Offensively, the Gamecocks banged out six home runs, two by shortstop Madison Stokes who opened his senior season with a 5-9 series at the plate. He also drew four walks.
Here’s the Gamecock’s schedule for this week:
2/20/18 – North Florida – 4 p.m.
2/21/18 – Winthrop – 4 p.m. (SECN+)
2/23/18 – Charleston Southern – 4 p.m. (SECN+)
