Brandon Smith (6-5 220) of Mineral, VA is one of the most heavily recruited defensive ends in the country for the 2019 class with offers from coast to coast. Clemson and USC are both on his offer list. Some of the others are Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Southern Cal, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Smith paid a visit to Clemson in January for a junior day and the Tigers are strong with him coming out of that visit.
“Clemson will be one of my top schools for sure,” Smith said. “They are doing of a good job of recruiting me right now. Penn State, Florida State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Georgia are also doing a really good job right now.”
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and defensive coordinator Brent Venables gave Smith the royal treatment on his visit making it clear to him how much he’s needed for the program.
“I got to talk with Coach Swinney which was great,” Smith said. “ It was great because we got to spend more one-on-one time with the coaches, and that is what we were looking for. I didn’t hang out with any of the players, but we did meet some of the players at the (basketball) game. The message (from the coaches) was their interest in me is very strong. My athletic abilities and range as a linebacker would be a great asset to their defense.”
Smith also is a basketball player and drew a visit from USC’s Will Muschamp for a game prior to the dead period. He’s not planning to take other visits until after his hoops season.
