Darlington Raceway President Kerry Tharp is charged with getting butts in the seats for his Labor Day race the Bojangles’ Southern 500. Wednesday he announced major renovations at the track that will provide more comfortable seating for those rear ends.
Tharp announced that starting Thursday a seven million dollar renovation project will commence with the majority of the work being spent on putting in wider seats, with backs and cupholders, in the Tyler Tower, and bleacher style seats, with backs, in the Wallace and Colvin Grandstands.
The seats in the Tyler Tower also will have an improved angle towards the track to give fans a better view. There also will be improvements in rest rooms and concession areas.
Tharp also announced a “Wall of Honor” will be constructed along the bottom of the Wallace and Colvin Grandstands that will include the name of each winner of races at the track.
Tharp added there will be a slight increase in some of the ticket prices as a result of these expenditures.
Work at the track should be completed in advance of this Labor Day Weekend’s events.
