South Carolina men’s basketball coach Frank Martin said he would not have recruited and added Brian Bowen to the Gamecocks basketball team if his presence would cause a negative tinge on the program.
Martin said Bowen arrived on campus and will practice for the first time with the team. Per NCAA transfer rules, Bowen is allowed to practice but cannot travel with the team.
Bowen joins South Carolina after he did not play in his time at Louisville after the FBI investigated his family for receiving illegal payments from Adidas in exchange for his attendance at the school.
In an media session Thursday, Martin said he received assurances from USC’s Compliance Department that Bowen has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
The 6-7 freshman cannot play until at least the end of first semester next season, but the Gamecocks will need to apply for Bowen’s reinstatement before he sees the floor.

Martin also said Rakym Felder is back on campus and will join the team at practice alongside Bowen, but still will not play this season.
