South Carolina Head Coach Frank Martin let the assembled media know early he did not appreciate how they handled the Gamecocks’ final exhibition game against Virginia Tech.
Martin took issue with a newspaper headline saying that the Gamecocks got “smashed” in an 86-67 loss to Virginia Tech on Sunday. The Gamecocks coach stated that he played five freshmen more than 14 consecutive minutes to get them experience against a more seasoned Hokies group.
South Carolina begins with an uncharacteristically tough test opening the new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium at Wofford to begin their season Friday.
Martin said Terriers coach Mike Young came to him last year and proposed the idea of the Gamecocks being the opening opponent, an offer Martin said, “I could not say no to.”
Wofford comes off a year where they finished below .500 overall, but 10-8 in the Southern Conference, finishing in a tie for fourth place.
USC’s coach is prepared for a loud atmosphere he believes will make his team better.
Hassani Gravett took the brunt of Martin’s criticism for his four turnovers in the first half.
Martin said the onus is on guys like Gravett and Frank Booker who have game experience to lead a largely young group.
