The USC and Virginia Tech basketball teams spent the weekend today and did more than play basketball. They bonded in the way the college athletics ideal was drawn up. Yes, they practiced and played, but they also performed community service. And their Sunday exhibition game, won by the Hokies 86-67, helped to raise thousands of dollars as part of the Hoops 4 Hurricane Relief.
USC coach Frank Martin and Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams are close friends. Their teams have scrimmaged nine years in a row. They’re such good friends, they refuse to schedule each other for a regular season game, it would be that uncomfortable. And Sunday gave them a platform to speak out on things beyond basketball. And each pledged $5000 from their families towards the relief fund.

As for the game, the Hokies outscored the Gamecocks in the second half 50-37 as they shot 57% over the final 20 minutes. USC relied heavily on the three point shot and was only 7-33 from downtown.
The Gamecocks open the regular season Friday night at Wofford.
