USC basketball coach Frank Martin is hosting Buzz Williams and Virginia Tech’s basketball team for the weekend. The Gamecocks and Hokies will have a closed scrimmage Saturday and then Sunday they will play a hurricane relief fund-raiser that’s open to the public. And Spartanburg Day’s Zion Williamson plans to attend that game Sunday.
Williamson’s mother confirmed Friday the plan for her son to take another unofficial visit to USC Sunday. He last visited for the Kentucky football game in September. Since then Williamson has taken official visits to Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and North Carolina. He’s also taken an unofficial visit to Clemson.
Williamson has not publicly indicated a favorite in this recruiting sweepstakes. The early signing period begins Wednesday and lasts a week. He has not said if he will sign then or wait until spring.
Last weekend Martin hosted one of the state’s top 2019 prospects in 6-9 DJ Burns of York Prep. It was the second unofficial visit to USC for Burns who also has been to Tennessee in the last month.
“Coach Martin is pretty awesome,” Burns said. “We started with watching practice. They looked good. Coach Martin is the same each time I’ve seen him with his guys. He is passionate and goes hard. I like that consistency. All of the coaches know me and I know them. It felt comfortable.”
Burns was joined on the visit by his mom and the two stayed over for the football game against Vanderbilt. He picked up an offer from Virginia this week and also has offers from Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, and LSU. He also is hearing from Clemson.
