Auburn had chances early against Clemson Saturday night in Death Valley, but despite a combined six plays inside the Clemson six on two first quarter drives, the visitors could muster but a pair of Daniel Carlson field goals. Those six points would be all the Clemson defense would allow in a 14-6 win. The Clemson defenders harassed Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham all night sacking him 11 times.

Auburn’s defense wasn’t half bad either and bottled up the Clemson offense much of the night, even knocking out Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant for a few plays in the second quarter. But when he returned Bryant directed a touchdown drive that included a pair of down the field passes for a 7-6 lead. And early in the third quarter Bryant had another lengthy completion that sparked a touchdown drive that he capped with a 27 yard run, his second touchdown run of the night. Bryant finished with 181 passing yards and 59 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns but most importantly protected the football and exhibited poise and confidence in the biggest game of his career.

Auburn had 94 yards after its first two possessions but finished with only 117 yards averaging 1.8 yards per play. Clemson’s defense totaled 11 sacks and 14 tackles for loss subtracting 76 yards from the Auburn offensive total. Defensive ends Austin Bryant (4 sacks) and Clelin Ferrell (1 sack) led the charge from the outside and kept pressure on Stidham all night. And cleaning up inside was linebacker Dorian O’Daniel with 14 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2 tackles for loss.
Clemson is now 2-0 and opens ACC play next Saturday night at Louisville where the Tigers will face the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Lamar Jackson who, in two games this season, already is over 1000 yards in total offense.
