DB Marlon Character Jr. of Atlanta and Northwest Mississippi JC committed to USC Tuesday afternoon, for a second time. And this time, Character said, the commitment will stick. Character first committed to the Gamecocks in high school but later switched to Auburn, at the urging of then Auburn assistants Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson. Those two left for USC before Character arrived at Auburn in 2016. He redshirted and then transferred to the junior college in January.
Character said once arriving at Northwest, Muschamp and Robinson resumed their recruiting of him and he is more than happy to reward their efforts with a pledge.
“I always had South Carolina in my mind when I left Auburn,” Character said. “It was just a matter of time to me committing while I was at Northwest. I went back to Atlanta to talk to my dad about it and let the coaches know I was ready to commit. They think my future will be bright there, as do I.”
Character also said he realizes he’s fortunate to a second chance with the Gamecocks after things didn’t work out for him at Auburn.
“It doesn’t happen to everybody, you don’t get a second chance like this,” he said. “I’m 100 percent committed to South Carolina. I’m not switching, not doing what I did in high school. I’ve been down that road. I am mature enough now to know this is the place I want to go.”
Character is a cornerback and one of the reasons he originally switched from USC to Auburn was the chance to play for Muschamp and Robinson. And now he will.
“The aggressiveness and the passion they both have for the game,” Character said in explaining what he likes about their defensive approach. “I’m the same way about the game. That’s what I’ve been looking for since I’ve been removed from high school. He’s a defensive minded head coach. I like the way they use their DBs and I like their play schemes. It’s not too complicated. I feel like I’ll catch on pretty quick when I get down there.”
Character will graduate from Northwest in December and will enroll at USC in January. He will have three years to play three with the Gamecocks. He’s the 18th commitment for the Gamecocks’ 2018 class and the third for the secondary.
