The new head baseball coach for the USC Gamecocks made his debut on SportsTalk.
On Monday, coach Mark Kingston said that he’s inherited a complete squad and he looks forwards to shuffling the pieces into a formative team. Before he can do that though he needs to fill out the remaining positions of his coaching staff. Kingston wasn’t ready to name his Director of Baseball Op but did say anyone who follows the sport will be familiar with the name he hires.
Kingston also took time to talk about his approach to the game. He says he is equal parts a numbers coach and guts guy. He believes that the numbers on bunting don’t show justifiable success to keep it as a regular tactic but says he also loves to go with his gut and reserves the right to go against convention.
“Sometimes a guy just got broken up with his girlfriend and the stats don’t know that,” Kingston joked.
As for his team, he said that pitcher Adam Hill will certainly assume the top roll on the rotation but after that he sees the entire bullpen as being open for competition. On offense, he said he thinks Carlos Cortez has the best bat but he sees a team that can score more runs than they did last year under Chad Holbrook.
