As the College sports season winds down, SportsTalkSC will invite beat writers who cover the opponents of USC and Clemson to weigh in on the 2017 football season. SportsTalk reached the Auburn sports reporter James Crepea to preview the Tigers vs Tigers.
Listen to what James Crepea had to say on SportsTalk in the player below:
Auburn will make its first road trip of the season to Death Valley and they’ll do it with their head held high. Last year Clemson survived 19-16 at Auburn who fielded not one, not two, but three quarterbacks in the game.
This season though Auburn cleared up the quarterback position behind five-star transfer QB Jarrett Stidham. As a true freshman at Baylor in 2015, Stidham threw 75-109 for 1,265 yards and 12 TD. AL.com writer James Crepea would caution any Stidham supporters that his big numbers were against some of the worst pass defenses in the league.
Other big names to look out for on offense are RB Kamryn Pettway and Kerreon Johnson. Pettway is a 240 pound train that can move the chains when his health and Johnson can line up anywhere on the field to confuse defenses.
Carl Lawson and Montravious Adams led the defense for Auburn both in their size and their impact in 2016 but both left for the NFL Draft. To mitigate the loss of those two the Auburn Tigers will look to complete an inside-out rebuild of their D-line with former 5-star recruit Derrick Brown and Byron Cowart. There will be a big question mark on who replaces Carl Lawson on the outside, Crepea believes it will be junior DE Jeff Holland but in two years Holland hasn’t seen much work.
Notable departures in the secondary are Rudy Ford and Josh Holsey. Junior DB Carlton Davis played as a fill-in starter last year and will easily assume the role of Holsey. Filling the shoes of Rudy Ford will be difficult but at nickleback the Tigers will look at sophomore Daniel Thomas or Jarvaris Davis.
