USC pitching coach turned interim head coach Jerry Meyers was on SportsTalk Tuesday to share his thoughts on how the MLB draft is impacting the Gamecocks program and also shed some light on how things are going within the program with Chad Holbrook gone and him running the day to day operations while the search for a new head coach is conducted.
Meyers had three of his pitchers selected in the first five rounds. Clarke Schmidt went to the Yankees in the 1st rounds, Wil Crowe to the Nationals in the 2nd and Tyler Johnson to the White Sox in the 5th. Meyers expects all three to sign, although he did say Johnson went later than he expected and there could be more negotiation involved with him.
Meyers said he is doing his best to answer any questions that drafted players or any player for that matter has about the program during this transition. Meyers said he was not surprised when Ray Tanner said that he would not consider anyone on the staff for the full time job. That said, he is not sure if he will have a shot to remain on the coaching staff when a new hire is made but understands that the nature of the business is that he will have to take a look at other opportunities.
