USC pitcher Clarke Schmidt joined us on SportsTalk Tuesday night to discuss what is was like getting the call from the New York Yankees that he was going to be their first round pick in the MLB draft.
Schmidt said it was a “whirlwind” of emotions when he found out that he would be going to the Yankees. Schmidt has long been slated as a first rounder, but coming off a recent Tommy John surgery there wasn’t any clear picture as to how early in the draft he would be selected. Needless to say he was ecstatic when his name came off the board early.
Schmidt said he and the Yankees haven’t come up with a rehab plan yet, but that should happen soon. Right now he is just working on mobility and is still a ways away from throwing a baseball. Schmidt has already talked to current Yankee pitcher and former Gamecock Jordan Montgomery about what the experience will be like in the Yankee organization.
