Basketball is on a lot of people’s mind but let’s not forget about all of the college baseball that wend down over the past few days. It was very productive weekend for Clemson and USC. The Tigers swept their road series against Boston College and USC bounced back to take two of three in its SEC series with Alabama. Many other teams around the state opened conference play over the weekend as well so there is plenty to cover in our weekly roundup. Let’s jump to it.
Clemson dominates Boston College
Monte Lee and the 7th ranked Tigers are steamrolling the ACC competition this season. The Tigers shutout the Eagles 2-0 Sunday to complete the three game series sweep. Clemson has won a school record 15 straight road games and is 20-4 overall and 7-1 in the ACC. Pat Krall pitched into 8th inning Sunday to improve to 4-0 this season. The Tigers are back on the field Tuesday with a home game against Furman.
USC takes series against Alabama
Alabama won the opening game of the series Friday night, but the 8th ranked Gamecocks fought back to take the series. They capped it with a 4-2 win Sunday. Clarke Schmidt got the start on the mound in the rubber game. He normally goes on Friday night but moved back a few days after sitting out last week with an oblique injury. He didn’t earn a decision, but was sharp in his six inning of work. John Parke picked up the win in relief. The Gamecocks have won 10 of their last 11 games. They are 16-6 and 5-1 in the SEC. Next up for them is a home game against The Citadel.
Coastal bounces back with a sweep
Defending national champion Coastal Carolina picked up a much needed series sweep against Arkansas State over the weekend. The Chanticleers were coming off a series loss last week against Texas State so the sweep improved them to 4-2 in Sun Belt play.
Cougars open CAA play with series win
The College of Charleston opened CAA play with a series win over Hofstra. The Cougars lost to the Pride Friday night but took the next two, including Sunday’s 4-2 win in the rubber game. They are 10-14 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Winthrop sweeps High Point
Winthrop continued its solid start in Big South play with a weekend sweep against High Point. The Eagles won Friday night, then took both games of a double-header Saturday. The three wins moved them to 5-1 in conference play. The Eagles next game is Wednesday at Clemson.
Citadel takes SoCon series
The Citadel managed to win two of three against VMI to open SoCon play with a series win. The Bulldogs clinched the series with a 4-2 win Sunday. They return to action Tuesday in Columbia against USC.
Wofford gets the best of Furman
Wofford won two of three over SoCon rival Furman in a weekend series that opened league play for both teams. Wofford won the first two games, but the Paladins did manage to salvage the final game Sunday with a 12-4 win.
PC drops two of three
Presbyterian dropped two of three in its Big South opening series against UNC Asheville. THe Blue Hose lost Friday then split a pair of games on Saturday.
