The USC women went through their final workout in Columbia before they hop on a plane to Stockton, California to continue play in the NCAA Tournament. The Gamecocks will face Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon at 4:00 (Eastern time) in a Sweet 16 matchup. This is USc’s fourth straight trip to the round of 16. For Quinnipiac, a 12 seed, this is a Cinderella run.
Staley said leaving Wednesday for the West Coast will be beneficial for getting acclimated to the new surroundings and time zone. Staley’s opinion on being sent so far away from home as a #1 seed is well known, but she said she’s not dwelling on it any more. “I think Stockton is going to put on a tournament,” she said. Then she joked she’d like to see some Stanford fans make the trip up to root for them since the Cardinal is playing in Lexington, Kentucky this weekend.
On the injury front, Staley said junior guard Allisha Gray will be available to play this weekend. She left Sunday’s game against Arizona State with what was initially feared to be a knee injury. The team received good news when doctors said her knee was structurally fine. Gray practiced with the team Wednesday.
