Take a break from all of the March Madness and get caught up on everything that went down on the diamond with Palmetto State baseball teams over the weekend. USC opened SEC play at Tennessee, Clemson had Virginia in an ACC series featuring two top 15 clubs and a whole lot more. Check out the details of how things turned out below.
USC sweeps SEC opener
Despite the fact it didn’t have starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt or closer Tyler Johnson, the 8th ranked Gamecocks still took all three games of its SEC lid lifting series at Tennessee. The Gamecocks completed the sweep with a 10-2 win Sunday. They also won 7-1 on Friday and 6-4 in extra innings on Saturday. That’s seven straight wins for the Gamecocks who are now 14-5 overall and 3-0 in the SEC. They have a home game against Charleston Southern Wednesday before an SEC home series with Alabama begins Friday.

Clemson takes 2nd ACC series of the season
13th ranked Clemson dropped the opening game of its home series with #14 Virginia, but the Tigers won the next two, including Sunday’s rubber game which they dominated 12-1. Monte Lee’s team is hot, winners of 10 of their last 11 games. The Tigers are 16-4 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. The Tigers are on the road for their next four games, at Charleston Tuesday night and then a three game road series with Boston College beginning Friday.

Tough weekend for Coastal Carolina
Life hasn’t been easy for the defending national champs this season. The Chanitcleers dropped two of three in their series with Texas State. After losing Friday night, they bounced back with a win Saturday, but dropped the rubber game Sunday, 10-7. The Chants are 12-9 this season and 1-3 in the Sun Belt. They are back on the field next weekend with a home conference series against Arkansas State.
Huskers sweep Cougars
The College of Charleston dropped all three games of its series with Nebraska over the weekend. 10-1, 6-1 and 6-2 were the final scores. The Cougars are 8-12 and will play host to Clemson Tuesday night.
Furman gets final tuneup before SoCon play begins
In its final series before Southern Conference play begins next week, Furman won two of three against North Carolina A&T. The Paladins won 7-3 Sunday to take the series.
Wofford and Yale split four
In a rare four game series, Wofford and Yale each ended up with a pair of wins. Wofford won Friday night, then split a double-header Saturday before losing 17-8 Sunday.
Citadel and Dartmouth split, too
The Citadel also had a four game series over the weekend, and like their SoCon rival in Spartanburg, the Bulldogs also split the four game set. The Bulldogs lost Thursday, won Friday and Saturday, and then dropped the Sunday finale 10-9. They are 7-12 this season.
Winthrop wins Big South opener
Winthrop got off to a solid start in conference play by taking two of three against UNC-Asheville. The Eagles clinched the series Sunday with a 1-0 shutout. They are 9-11 overall, 2-1 in the Big South.
Charleston Southern salvages one against Longwood
Charleston Southern avoided a sweep in its Big South opening series against Longwood with a 10 inning, 1-0 win Sunday.
PC wins series with Army
Presbyterian clinched its series with Army with a 13-4 win in the rubber game Sunday. The Blue Hose also won Friday’s game 9-0. That evened their record at 11-11.
USC Upstate wins series
USC Upstate took two of three games against Quinnipiac. The Spartans clinched it with a 5-3 win Sunday. They also won 5-3 Friday night.
