USC, which is back in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament for the first time 13 years and seeking its first tournament win in 44 years, will have the chance to face two old, fiery rivals in Greenville.
Friday night the Gamecocks will take on Marquette, a program with which they shared the national spotlight in the early 70s and against which they played one of the most memorable games in USC history. And should they beat the Golden Eagles, the Gamecocks most likely will face off with old ACC rival Duke on Sunday.
Many national pundits aren’t forecasting the Gamecocks to get past Marquette. They see this as perfect seven vs ten upset material.
The Gamecocks have not been playing their best basketball in recent weeks with losses in six of their last nine games. But Frank Martin is optimistic his team can return to the form of January that had them sitting atop the SEC standings for a brief period.
