USC closed out the regular season with a 75-70 loss at Ole Miss that left them with a 22-9 record and a 12-6 mark in the SEC.
The Gamecocks were down by as many as 20 points in Oxford before they mounted a second half comeback they fell short. Sindarius Thornwell scored 25 points to lead the Gamecocks. That solid game wasn’t quite enough to get Thornwell the regular SEC scoring title. He finished the season averaging 21.160 points per game; Kentucky’s Malik Monk finished averaging 21.161. It doesn’t get much closer than that. Thornwell and Monk are the two front runners the SEC Player of the Year award that will be announced next week.
The loss to the Rebels dropped the Gamecocks to the number four seed in the SEC Tournament. That still comes with a two-game bye so the Gamecocks are off until Friday afternoon.
