Clemson’s win over Virginia Tech last night in the ACC Championship Game elevated the Tigers to #2 in the final ranking by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. And by virtue of that, the Tigers are headed back to where they lost in the national championship game last January, Glendale, Arizona.
The Tigers will play #3 seed Ohio State on New Year’s Eve in one of the national semi-final games. Alabama, the #1 seed, will meet #4 Washington in Atlanta. Kickoff times will be announced later today.
Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State appeared to be locks going into this afternoon’s announcement. The only debate seemed to be whether Penn State, which won the Big Ten Championship last night, should move ahead of Washington.
The committee, however, felt the Huskies, who are 12-1 and won convincingly over Colorado in the PAC-12 Championship Game, were worthy of the spot despite concerns about its strength of schedule.
Penn State is 5th in the final ranking and will play in the Rose Bowl. Michigan is 6th.
Clemson and Ohio State last met in the 2014 Orange Bowl, a 40-35 Clemson victory. The Buckeyes are 11-1 this season with that lone loss to Penn State.
