USC is back on the college football bowl schedule and will be returning to the state of Alabama for the Birmingham Bowl to face 22nd ranked South Florida on December 29th. Kickoff on ESPN will be 2:00 from Legion Field.
The Gamecocks will take a four game bowl winning streak into the game. After not qualifying for a bowl game last season, Will Muschamp doubled the USC win total this season with six qualifying the Gamecocks for a bowl trip.
This will be the Gamecocks third appearance in Birmingham for a bowl game and they will be looking for their first in. They lost to Missouri in the 1979 Hall of Fame Bowl and fell to Connecticut in the 2010 Papa John’s Bowl. USC is 8-12 all-time in bowl games.
This will be the second meeting between USC and USF. The Gamecocks defeated the Bulls in Columbia 34-3 in 2004.
Muschamp will be coaching in his third bowl game as a head coach. At Florida, he defeated Ohio State in the 2012 Gator Bowl and lost to Louisville in the 2013 Sugar Bowl.
The Gamecocks will open bowl practice on December 15th and will arrive in Birmingham on December 26th.
Muschamp announced that sophomore quarterback turn receiver Lorenzo Nunez will transfer to s school where he can play quarterback. As for his own quarterback situation, Muschamp said Jake Bentley remains the starter but Brandon McIlwain will continue to compete for the job during the bowl practices.
