Will Muschamp just wrapped up his Sunday conference call where he gave his final thoughts on the near miss against Texas A&M and looked ahead to next Saturday’s game against Georgia. Among the items on the agenda Sunday: the quarterback situation, the injuries to Deebo Samuel and Bryan Edwards and the attitude of the team after two straight losses. Muschamp said he is proud of the team’s effort, but the bottom line is they didn’t win.
Muschamp said he expects Bryan Edwards and Deebo Samuel will be back this week.
Muschamp isn’t saying who will start at QB this week, but said he knows both Orth and McIlwain will see action.
Muschamp said he and Kirby Smart are close friends and will remain close friends even though they are coaching at SEC rival schools.
Muschamp said they continue to get better on defense each week, but they have a new challenge this week against Georgia.
Muschamp on being #3 in the SEC in pass defense: “Well, we’re not playing the run real well so why would you pass it?”
Hayden Hurst is an option at punt returner this week. It’s an open competition after the two muffed punts against Texas A&M.
Muschamp said the most disappointing part of this season has been the injuries at key positions that have set back their progress.
Muschamp is frustrated by the hamstring injuries, but said the total number of “soft tissue” injuries is small so it’s not a training issue.
Will Muschamp pointed out that 31 of USC’s 42 scholarship players on offense are first year players.
Muschamp said they are watching Georgia film and will decide who starts at QB based on who gives them the best shot, practices the best.
Muschamp said he makes the call on when to switch QBs, but he takes Roper’s input into account.
