USC coach Will Muschamp landed one of his most highly acclaimed commitments Sunday night in LB Sherrod Greene (6-1 220) of Rocky Mount, NC.
Green, an invitee to The Opening earlier this month, chose the Gamecocks from his short list that also included Alabama, Virginia Tech and NC State.
Greene visited USC Saturday for its social gathering of top prospects and came away impressed. After giving it 24 hours of thought, he concluded Muschamp’s program was best for him.
“It’s the place I felt most comfortable,” Greene said. “Being around all the coaches I felt like they meant every word they said to me. I just enjoy talking to them.”
Greene also is aware the Gamecocks lose a crew of linebackers after the 2016 season there’s plenty of opportunity for him to get early playing time.
“It was a big deal for me knowing that coming in my freshman year it’s a guaranteed chance that I’m going to play and I’ve got a good chance of even starting. That’s a huge deal to me and played a big role in me committing.”
Greene contacted Muschamp and linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler with the news Sunday night and he obviously made their day.
“He told me how fired up he was and Coach Hutzler felt the same way,” Greene said adding that he is firm in his commitment and foresees no chance of wavering.
Greene had 154 tackles last season but will miss a few games early this season as he recovers from a broken hand. He becomes USC’s 19th commitment for the 2017 class.
