DB CJ Avery of Grenada, MS spent three days at a Clemson camp in June and left there with the Tigers #1 on his list. And at that time he planned to be back for the All-In Cookout July 22nd but he said Thursday night his parents won’t be able to make it so neither will he. He is going to Florida State the week after next and he is also going to Mississippi State for a camp. And he liked to get to Auburn in early August before getting into practice.
Avery has had a top ten of Clemson, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Louisville, Tennessee, Michigan, Alabama Cal and Auburn since early June and that has not changed. But it will change soon because Avery plans to cut his list to a top four or five before his season starts.
Avery said he talks with Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables basically every day and the message from the Tigers’ coach remains strong.
“He’s very interested in me and I’m a pretty high priority as far as safety goes,” Avery said. “He said he’d just love to coach me and stuff like that.”
Avery said Ole Miss and Mississippi State along with Auburn, Louisville and Notre Dame are also making a strong push. He has also visited Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Alabama this summer.
Avery is graduating early but he won’t make his decision until after his season.
“Deciding factor, I’d have to say that development,” Avery said. “Getting in and become a better player and try to get to the NFL.” And he said there is not particular strong pull for him to stay in state.
