They did it the hard way and now will start from scratch Monday night in the championship series of the College World Series. Coastal Carolina completed a three game run thru the loser’s bracket Saturday night with a 7-4 win over TCU Saturday night and will face Arizona in the best of three title series. The Wildcats also battled thru the loser’s bracket and defeated Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon 5-1.
The Chants built a big lead on the Horned Frogs and then had to hold on at the end. A four run fourth inning gave them a 7-1 cushion. But TCU kept chipping away with one in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth. The Frogs got the tying run to the plate in the ninth with one out but Bobby Holmes induced a ground ball double play to end the game.
Tyler Chadwick hit the Chants first home run of the CWS, part of a three hit night for him. Connor Owings and GK Young had two RBIs each. Alex Cunningham pitched into the seventh scattering eight hits and allowing four runs to earn his tenth win. Holmes allowed three hits and one run over the final two-and-a-third innings.
Coastal is 53-17 and becomes the second team from the state to play for the national championship. USC, of course, has won two titles and has played for the championship four other times.
