TCU took advantage of two Chanticleer errors to score two runs in the fifth inning and two in the ninth inning and secure a 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in the second round of the 2016 College World Series Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
The Chanticleers, who suffered just their second loss in an 18-game span, fall to 50-17 and will play #5 national seed Texas Tech on Thursday at 7 pm (CT)/8 pm (ET) on ESPN2 in an elimination game.
The Horned Frogs (49-16) grabbed an early 1-0 lead as Luken Baker hit a solo home run to right field, his 11th of the season and sixth of the postseason.
TCU took advantage of a CCU error in the fifth to push two runs across to take a 3-0 lead. Josh Watson started the frame with a single. Dane Steinhagen hit what looked to be a double play, but an error on the play put runners on the corners. Ryan Merrill followed with a walk to load the bases. Alex Cunningham got Michael Landestoy to pop out, but walked Austen Wade to force in a run and keep the bases loaded. Coastal turned to Bobby Holmes, who promptly induced a ground ball, but CCU was unable to complete the double play to allow Steinhagen to score.
TCU tacked on a run in the sixth to lead 4-0. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases before Steinhager hit into a double play to allow Luken Baker to score. Holmes limited the damage by getting a ground out to end the top half.
Coastal answered in the home half of the sixth to cut its deficit to three, 4-1. Michael Paez hit a leadoff single and scores on two-out RBI single to center by G.K. Young.
The Frogs regained a four-run lead, 5-1, in the top of the ninth. Merrill reached on a single and scored on an RBI triple from Landestoy. Then, with two outs, Coastal looked to escape with just the one run allowed. However, on a ground ball, a throwing error allowed Landestoy to score to provide the 6-1 final.
Cunningham (9-4) suffered the loss as he allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Brian Howard (10-2) earned the win. He worked 5.2 innings and scattered six hits for one run with seven strikeouts.
