USC closed out its home regular season schedule with an easy 16-4 win over The Citadel Tuesday night at Founders Park. The victory was the Gamecocks’ 30th in 34 home games and improved their record to 39-13 with only a three game series at Alabama later this week left in the regular season. The Citadel drops to 16-37.
Jonah Bride sparked a 16 hit Gamecock attack with four hits and five RBIs, both career highs. Senior DC Arendas added four RBIs with his third home run of the season, a grand slam as part of a seven run fifth inning. And John Jones drove in two runs with a first inning single.
Another highlight for the Gamecocks, the first hit and RBI of the season for freshman outfielder Brandon McIlwain, who drove in the game’s final run in the bottom of the eighth.
Colie Bowers worked the first four innings on the mound for USC and allowed three hits and a run while striking out four. He did not pitch deep enough in the game to figure into the decision. Brandon Murray followed and allowed five hits and three runs but still earned the victory to improve to 2-0. Three other Gamecock relievers didn’t allow a hit over the final three innings.
