USC’s trouble against Tennessee was extended Tuesday night with a 66-64 loss to the Vols at Colonial Life Arena. That’s 15 straight for Rocky Top over the Gamecocks, a streak that started in 2007. Dave Odom is the last USC hoops coach to taste victory against Tennessee.
Tennessee (12-5, 4-1) almost ran USC (10-7, 1-4) out of the gym with its hot shooting, especially from three. The Vols connected on 10-18 3-pointers and ran its lead to 17 in the second half. The Gamecocks rallied in the final three minutes to cut the lead to as few as two, but couldn’t get the equalizer before time expired. In the end the Vols 57% shooting night was too much to overcome. The Gamecocks finished the game 37% from the floor, they only hit four of the 17 3-pointers they attempted.
Sindarius Thornwell overcame a slow start to lead the Gamecocks with 17 points. Demetrius Henry was the only other double-digit scorer with 12.
Next up for USC is a date with top ranked and undefeated Kentucky. The 18-0 Wildcats beat Vanderbilt 65-57 Tuesday night.
