USC finished its stay in Charleston Sunday night losing to Akron 68-63 in the third place game of the Charleston Classic at TD Arena. The Gamecocks went 1-2 in the tournament defeating Cornell Thursday and losing to Charlotte Friday. They are now 2-3 on the season.
USC led 2-0 and that was the only lead of the night for the Gamecocks. The Zips built a 12 point lead in the second half but the Gamecocks chipped away and caught up at 55-55 with 6:55 to play.
It was 60-58 Akron with 3:35 to play when the Gamecocks had five straight scoreless possessions, including four turnovers. The Zips to the lead to 63-58. A jumper by Sindarius Thornwell made it a three point game with :34 left, but three free throws build the lead to six. Thornwell nailed a three with :07 left and that’s as close as USC would get.
Thornwell led the Gamecocks with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Duane Notice had 12 points and 4 assists. The Gamecocks shot 39% for the game, were 2-10 from three and 11-20 from the line. The did outrebound the Zips 45-32 with 21 offensive boards, but only managed 17 second chance points.
USC is back in action Wednesday night at home against UNC-Asheville.
