USC started the final quarter facing a third and three from the Auburn 25. They ran Davis and came up a yard short, but converted on 4th-1 on the next play. The Gamecocks moved into the red zone a few plays later, but the drive ended with a Dylan Thompson interception in the end zone.
Auburn took over on its own 20 after the pick in the end zone. It took the Tigers just six plays to go the 80 yards for a touchdown. Nick Marshall scored from six yards out to make it 42-35 Auburn with 11:22 to play.
USC started its next drive on its own 25. The Gamecocks needed two fourth down conversions, both longer than six yards, to keep the drive alive. Those conversions moved it just across midfield. The Gamecocks moved the ball to the 15 after a pass interference call. However, that’s where the drive stalled. They failed to convert a 4th-14 from the Auburn 19.
Auburn took over on the 19. The Tigers picked up a first down, but the Gamecock defense got a rare stop and forced a punt with about :90 left in the game.
USC took over on its own 15. The Gamecocks moved the Auburn 41 by way of a few passes and a 15 yard late hit. That gave them enough time for one heave towards the end zone, but Thompson’s pass was intercepted in the end zone.
Auburn won it 42-35.
