USC is savoring the feeling of a win again. The Gamecocks took advantage of an open date to regroup and a Furman team that didn’t stack up talent wise and coasted to a 41-10 win Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. Steve Spurrier said it wasn’t always pretty, but after nearly a month without a win, he didn’t complain.
The Gamecocks did most of their damage on the ground; Mike Davis and David Williams both finished over 100 yards. Davis carried it 18 times for 111 yards and tow touchdowns, Williams 11 for 110. Shon Carson also had a solid day running with seven carries for 85 yards and a score.
Dylan Thompson had a modest passing day. He completed 14-22 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t throw an interception, but lost a fumble on a sack. Furman finished with four sacks. USC tallied just one. Connor Mitch and Perry Orth both got in the game but neither one did anything eye popping. Orth came in first and failed to complete either of his two passes. Mitch completed two of his four passes for 19 yards. Both rotated in and out for most of the fourth quarter, but mostly handed the ball off to the running backs.
The defense started out a bit shaky, especially against the run. Furman scored its only touchdown on a 60 yard Hank McCloud run in the first quarter. The Paladins finished the day with 211 yards rushing. Most of their damage came in the first half. The Gamecocks held them to 91 yards passing.
Quote from the Head Ball Coach:
“It feels good to win a ball game. I told our guys to enjoy it and we’ll start getting ready for Auburn on Monday.”
- Defensive tackle J.T. Surratt left the game in the 3rd quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return
- Tight end Rory Anderson had a left triceps strain and didn’t return to action. It was not the same triceps injury he suffered in the preseason.
- Linebacker Johnathan Walton suffered a concussion.
- Offensive lineman Na’Ty Rodgers and defensive lineman Kaiwan Lewis were both suspended for the game for a violation of team rules. Spurrier said they will be back Monday.
