Clemson’s defense dominated the Cardinals most of the quarter forcing two punts and stopping them on fourth down once. The Cards’ defense was equally tough until Clemson put together a long drive late in the quarter and had first and goal at the one. But the Tigers couldn’t knock it in the end zone and Lakip booted a 21 yard field goal for a 23-17 lead.
With 1:20 left, Louisville started at its own 19. On the first play Will Gardner hit James Quick for 73 yards to the Clemson 8. The Cardinals got to the one but lost a yard on second down. For some reason, Gardner quickly got to the line and spiked the ball bringing up fourth down. And on that play, rolling to his right, Gardner’s pass was knocked by by DeShawn Williams the save the game for the Tigers.
