USC turned to the running game late in the first quarter and into their first drive of this quarter and they got the offense moving. But on third down from the Vandy 27, Rory Anderson could not keep his foes off the line as he made a catch at the Commodores 2. Elliott Fry booted a 45 yard field goal to put the Gamecocks on the board. Vanderbilt 14-3.
After forcing a punt, the Gamecocks put together another scoring drive going 79 yards in 7 plays. Thompson hung a pass into the end zone for Damiere Byrd who made the catch and got both feet down for the score. Vanderbilt 14-10.
Late in the half the Gamecocks defense came up with a big play. A punt pushed Vanderbilt back to their 13 Ralph Webb had runs of 20 and 14 yards and eventually the Commodores reached their 49. On second down, backup quarterback Wade Freebeck, under pressure, through an out pass towards the Vandy sideline. Gamecock corner Brison Williams broke on the pass and picked it off returning it 53 yards for a touchdown, the Gamecocks’ first pick six since 2012. USC 17-14.
