After the gloom and doom of Georgia last weekend, it was smiles all around outside the Clemson locker room following Saturday’s 73-7 romp over South Carolina State. The Tigers dominated every aspect of the game and posted some offensive and defensive numbers that rank among best ever for a single game.
Clemson finished with 735 yards (3rd most all-time) while allowing only 44 (6th all-time). The Tigers passed for 467 yards, one off the school mark, and gave up 37 yards thru the air. And the Tigers rushed for 268 yards while holding the Bulldogs to 7 yards.
Cole Stoudt was 22-31 for 302 yards and 1 touchdown. The completions and yards are career highs for him. Deshaun Watson was 8-9 for 154 yards and 3 scores.
Artavis Scott set a Clemson single game record with 164 receiving yards on 6 catches and he scored twice. Mike Williams had 4 catches for 83 yards. And Wayne Gallman led the ground game with 77 yards on 10 carries. Adam Choice added 74 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts.
The Tiger defense had 4 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and safety Jadar Johnson, an Orangeburg native, took an interception back 60 yards for a score.
Here’s what some of the Tigers were saying after the game:
SC State coach Buddy Pough was very disappointed in his team’s performance though he knew it was one-sided matchup on paper going in.
Clemson is off next weekend and next will play at Florida State in two weeks. SC State plays next week at Coastal Carolina.
