USC staved off elimination with a 9-0 win over Campbell Sunday afternoon. The win kept the Gamecocks alive in the NCAA Regional its hosting and set up a rematch with Campbell for Sunday night at 7:00.
USC freshman Wil Crowe answered the bell on the mound; he went the distance, allowed four hits, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in the shutout performance. He threw 101 pitches in the outing, and improved to 8-4 with the win.
Crowe said he new he needed to do everything he could to save the bullpen. “I knew that we needed a gout outing and that I needed to go deep into the game, especially if we win, then we have a game tonight. So I went into it thinking that if I kept my pitch count down then I could help the team out for later.”
Offensively, the Gamecocks scored a run in the third and four in the fourth and ninth innings. Max Schrock and Joey Pankake each had a pair of hits and both drove in a pair of runs. IT was good to see,” Gamecocks coach Chad Holbrook said, “got some hits there in the fourth with some really good at-bats. …It was a good offensive performance for the most part.”
- There was a 12 minute delay in the first inning while the umpires left the field to check the rule book on a batter’s interference call. They play happened with Joey Pankake batting and Max Schrock on first. Schrock broke for second, but Pankake inadvertently interfered with the catcher on his swing. According to the rule it is a dead ball unless the runner is caught stealing on the throw, which Schrock would have been had he not stopped running right before the base. There was no tag, and the played was ruled dead. The umpires said the delay was to confirm they got the call right. Campbell coach Greg Goff wasn’t happy, but it didn’t matter; USC didn’t score that inning anyway.
- Max Schrock has seven hits in the regional, more than any other player. He left the game in the fourth inning after an RBI double. Chad Holbrook said Schrock’s back is very sore today. He’s not sure if he will play in the second game.
- Holbrook did not name a starter for the second game. He said he would probably wait until the lineups had to be turned in about an hour before game time.
