USC’s series victory at Vanderbilt proved to be beneficial in a couple of ways. First, it helped the Gamecocks gain the #4 seed for this week’s SEC Tournament in Hoover, AL and thus avoid the dreaded single elimination play-in games on Tuesday. And second, it boosted the Gamecocks in the official NCAA RPI to #8.
The NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Committee leans heavily on the RPI when seeding teams for the tournament and the top eight seeds will host Super Regionals should they advance to that round.
The top seven in the RPI this week are Virginia, Florida, Florida State, Indiana, Oregon State, Vanderbilt and Louisiana-Lafayette. Clemson dropped to 51st this week.
USC coach Chad Holbrook said this morning he will start Jordan Montgomery Wednesday night in the tournament opener if he’s feeling good coming off his start last Thursday night at Vanderbilt. If Montgomery can’t go, freshman Reed Scott will get the start.
Holbrook said he will evaluate his injured players daily regarding their availability meaning there will be game time decisions made on Connor Bright, Elliott Caldwell and Max Schrock.
