Former North Greenville University football standout wide receiver Freddie Martino has signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League as reported on Saturday night.
Martino was a four-year starter for the Crusaders, leading the team in receptions and yards in each season, including two seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards. Since the 2010 season, Martino played in 48 games, catching 296 passes for 3,766 yards and 26 touchdowns while also scoring 5 times on the ground, cementing himself in the record books at North Greenville.
In 11 games during the 2013 season, the North, SC native totaled an NCAA Division II record 146 reception for an average of 13. 3 receptions per game. Martino also set the school record for receiving yards in a season with 1, 680 and found the end zone 12 times.
The Atlanta Falcons did not take a wide receiver in the 2014 NFL draft, instead focusing on needs primarily along the offensive line and on the defensive side of the ball. Martino will compete for a spot on the squad that currently had just seven wide receivers under contract, including two of the NFL’s best receivers in Roddy White and Julio Jones.
