Just over two seconds away from winning their 20th game of the season and claiming the 5th seed for next week’s ACC Tournament, it all slipped away from Clemson on an in bounds pass in an 83-78 overtime loss to Pittsburgh Saturday at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Leading 67-65 with 2.4 seconds to play, the Tigers attempted to throw the ball in from under the Panthers’ basket. But Pitt’s Josh Newkirk stole the ball and hit a game tying jumper just ahead of the buzzer. The Tigers never recovered from that blow falling behind quickly in overtime.
David Hood has the video review from Littlejohn Coliseum.
KJ McDaniels led Clemson with 24 points. Jaron Blossomgame had 14. Pitt’s Lamar Patterson led all scorers with 30 including 5 three pointers.
Brad Brownell post game press conference:
Pittsburgh now gets the fifth seed for the tournament and the Tigers will have to wait on the result of tonight’s UNC-Duke game and tomorrow’s Syracuse-Florida State game before knowing their seed. A Florida State loss hands the Tigers the 6th seed, but a Seminole victory could drop the Tigers to 7th. To get the 6th seed in that case. Clemson would need Duke to beat North Carolina. That would make Duke the #2 seed, and thru the tie-breaking process, because Clemson defeated Duke and Florida State did not, Clemson would get the #6 seed.
