USC guard Sindarius Thornwell has been selected as the SEC’s Freshman of the Week. Thornwell helped the Gamecocks win back-to-back SEC games last week, the first time the team has won consecutive league games since 2011. The Lancaster native averaged 20.5 points, five rebounds and five assists in wins over Vanderbilt and Alabama. He really made his mark in the game with the Crimson Tide. That game was in the balance late when Thornwell took over. He scored or assisted on 15 of the Gamecocks final 17 points. He clinched the game when he made two free throws in the with just over five seconds to play to stretch the Gamecocks lead to four. They ended up winning by one point.
The is the second time he’s earned this honor from the SEC.
Frank Martin has been praising Thornwell’s play for the past few weeks. He told reporters Thornwell has become the leader on the team and is one of the most coachable players on the roster.
