RB Derrell Scott of Havelock, NC is taking his final official visit this weekend to Florida and then will take a week to have final in home visits and make his decision before announcing on January 27th at 3:15 PM at his school. Scott is also considering USC and Tennessee. One internet report has put the Vols out front at this point. That’s something Havelock assistant coach Caleb King, who handles recruiting for his players, can’t confirm. “I will say Tennessee has done a great job recruiting him as well as South Carolina,” King said Friday morning. “It’s all going to be decided next week. At 3:15 he’s going to pick a hat.” USC recruiter Deke Adams and Tennessee recruiter Robert Gillespie visited with Scott Thursday. USC head coach Steve Spurrier will be in January 23rd, a day after Tennessee coach Butch Jones. “I know they talked about depth charts, playing time, the future of South Carolina football and where he would fit in in their plans,” King said of yesterday’s meeting between Scott and Adams. “From what Derrell told me, everything was just fine.” Former Gamecock assistant coach Brad Lawing, who once coached at Havelock, is recruiting Scott for Florida. “He’s done a great job recruiting Derrell and has a chance as well. He’s not seen Florida so he’s just taking a nice look at Florida to see what they have and be around there people to see if he feels comfortable there.” For much of Scott’s recruiting the feeling was that USC was the team to beat but King disagrees with that assessment. “I don’t ever think there was a slam dunk. I think there was perception out there he was going to follow Pharoh (Cooper). They are very good friends. Of course he’s also very good friends with Kendal Vickers who is probably going to be a starting defensive end at Tennessee next year.” King said Scott will keep his decision to his self until he announces his decision on the 27th.
RB Alvin Kamara has been given a release from Alabama and is looking at Clemson, Florida State, Oklahoma State and UCLA at this point. Kamara is from Norcross, GA and was offered by Clemson in high school. He was redshirted this season and was suspended for the Sugar Bowl.
USC and Clemson recruiters were among the coaches to visit Thursday with DE Andrew Williams of McDonough, GA. Joe Robinson from USC was in during the day and Clemson’s Marion Hobby attended Williams’ high school banquet Thursday night. Ole Miss recruiter Chris Kiffin also visited Williams Thursday. Williams will visit Auburn this weekend, Ole Miss on the 24th and Clemson on the 31st. Right now USC is on the outside looking in on official visits.
With the ‘dead period’ over, Clemson got back on the recruiting trail stopping by to visit junior OL Brian Chaffin of Charlotte Thursday. Clemson and USC have expressed interest in Chaffin, though neither has offered. “I think Clemson is showing me more interest than South Carolina right now,” Chaffin said. “They told my coach that they’re focusing more on (offensive) tackles in this class but that I’m still high on their board.” He plans to attend a junior day at Clemson next month. He did pick up an offer from North Carolina Thursday, his sixth. They join NC State, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Mississippi State and Charlotte. Chaffin will visit Northwestern Saturday and plans to get back to NC State soon. He is interested in both the Tigers and Gamecocks.. Other schools showing interest include Georgia Tech and Duke. Chaffin will take several visits over the next several months before he begins to narrow his list. “I want to visit the schools that are most interested in me and take it from there,” he said. Chaffin does not have any favorites.
