The Badgers took the second half kickoff and went right back to their running game. They moved right down the field with James White breaking off runs of 14 and 32 yards getting the Badgers to the Gamecock 13. On and seven from the USC 10, Chaz Sutton sacked Stave and that led to a 35 yard field goal by Jack Russell. Wisconsin 17-USC 13.
On the Gamecocks’ first play of the quarter, Shaw was stripped of the football while running around his left side and Wisconsin recovered at the Gamecock 31. But the USC defense held and Russell missed a 42 yard field goal attempt.
That set the Gamecocks off on a touchdown drive that was kept alive by a fourth and seven pass from Shaw to Ellington for 22 yards on which Ellington made a juggling catch at the Badgers’ 22. Two plays later Shaw found Ellington again just inside the front pylon on the left side of the end zone for a touchdown and a 20-17 USC lead.
As the quarter ended, Wisconsin was on the move to the USC 26. Stave left the game and went to the locker room a couple of plays after taking a hard hit from Vic Hampton.
End of quarter…USC 20-Wisconsin 17.
