The Badgers answered the Gamecocks’ score with one early in the quarter. Three big plays sparked the drive…a third down pass of 11 yards to Jared Abbrederis for the first down, a 20 yard run by Melvin Gordon and a 36 yard pass to tight end Jacob Pedersen to the Gamecock 1. From there Stave hit his other tight end Sam Arneson for the one yard score to make it a 7-7 game.
USC responded with another scoring drive that ended with a little trickery by Steve Spurrier. A 32 yard pass from Shaw to Ellington put the Gamecocks at the Badgers’ 9. On the next play, Shaw tossed the ball to Pharoh Cooper who was sweeping from right to left. Cooper then tossed the ball to Ellington who had peeled back from his receiver spot. And Ellington then lofted a pass across the field to Shaw on the right side of the end zone for the touchdown. The extra point snap was bad and and the conversion run was stopped. USC 13-7.
Wisconsin came right back with an impressive 75 yard drive in 16 plays, almost all of it on the ground. But Stave took to the air on third and goal from the USC 3 and hit Jeff Duckworth for the touchdown with :13 left in the half. The extra point gave Wisconsin a 14-13 lead at halftime.
