USC finished the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu on a high note Wednesday defeating Akron 69-59 for third place. The Gamecocks sandwiched wins over St. Mary’s and Akron around a loss to Boise State and will return to the mainland with 4-6 record. The Gamecocks and Zips will play again Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM in Columbia.
Duane Notice led the Gamecocks with 15 points, a career high and his third straight double digit outing in the tournament. He also grabbed 5 rebounds.
The Gamecocks trailed 31-25 at halftime but opened the second half with a 12-5 run to take their first lead. A Notice basket started a 14-3 Gamecock run midway thru the second half and USC took a 53-45 lead with just over seven minutes to play. Akron pulled to within three but Notice scored a basket and then came up with a steal and a layup as the lead went back to seven points.
Four other Gamecocks scored in double figures with Sindarius Thornwell and Brenton Williams each notching 12 points. The Gamecocks shot only .417 for the game but made 12 of 17 from the line.
