On the first play of the quarter, Shaw threw the fade to Shaq Roland who made the catch just inside the line on the right side of the end zone for a 9 yard touchdown and the Gamecocks go back on top 14-7.
Clemson had to punt on its first possession of the quarter and the ball hogging Gamecock offense commenced a 13 play, 65 yard drive that took 5:06 off the clock. The Gamecocks methodically moved down the field and reached the Clemson 3 but on third down a jump pass by Shaw to Roland fell incomplete. Elliott Fry then booted a 21 yard field goal for a 17-7 USC lead with 8:25 left in the half.
Clemson made the last noise of the half despite Boyd being sacked twice and being flagged for intentional grounding. The grounding call came on a second down play from the USC 10 and led to a Chandler Cantanzaro field goal of 38 yards pulling the Tigers to within 17-10 at the half.
